Cuffing season is again another one of those terms that may actually have a name finally but it has been around for years. Cuffing season when it comes to dating typically happens in the fall and winter when singles who would usually rather be single or are only interested in hookups are all about finding someone to be tied down within a serious relationship. This is usually brought on by the cold weather and the fact that most of us spend the majority of time indoors.
Singles tend to get lonely during this time and search out other lonely and desperate singles who are looking to be cuffed into a relationship for no better reason than to have someone to spend time with during the winter months and the impending slew of holidays so they aren't alone and lonely. Many singles reach out to be cuffed because everyone seems to disappear as the weather gets cooler and having a relationship means you'll always have someone to be with. Cuffing season is far more predominant in colder climates and is most definitely a seasonal phenomenon.
The main purpose of cuffing is to find someone who is going to keep you warm at night during those long winter months. And cuffing season during the holidays just makes sense, it means that you won't have to hear from your family members yet again about how they wish that you could find someone to be with. Serial singles look to find someone to be with for the holiday cuffing season so that they don't have to hear: "Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?" "When are you going to find a nice man/woman to settle down with?" over and over again, relieving one of the many pressures that come along with the holidays. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) often 'Cuffers' will cut their relationship short once the weather starts to warm up and everyone starts to come out of hibernation.
Cuffing is quite easy to do with someone. Some singles will say that it's as easy as finding a hookup except you do have to put in a little bit of effort to keep the relationship going over the fall and winter months. Those singles who are looking to cuff will spend a little more time using dating apps to find someone that they'll actually be interested in spending more than a dinner date or a little play time under the sheets with. Often these relationships are less meaningful than others because the one doing the cuffing typically has no or little intention of the relationship turning into anything that's going to last longer than 6 or 7 months.
To actually survive and deal with the dating pressure during the cuffing season you need to make sure that you take the tips below into consideration.
Update your dating profile constantly. Change your profile pic often and update your personal information and freshen up what others see when they click on you.
Don't just date singles who you think are "your type". Say yes to singles who catch your eye but you normally wouldn't date. You never know what could happen and you may be very pleasantly surprised.
Do things that you normally wouldn't do. Take a risk and do something that is completely out of your comfort zone.
Change up your look, go with a new hair color or hairstyle completely. Buy a new wardrobe or change up your personal style in another way. Do something different that's going to get your noticed and turn heads.
Take the risk and talk about hot topics such as politics and religion. This will make for an interesting conversation and at the same time weed out some singles that are not worth it because you will never see eye to eye on very important topics such as these.
Avoid the headaches that come with social media and dating by removing yourself from the situation or even take the time and remove the app from your phone. If you remove the temptation you won't have to worry about as much and you will only be on Facebook or other social media when you're actually sitting at a home computer. It will cause you far less stress when you're 'out of the FB loop.
Avoid the awkward "who's paying" etiquette. When planning the date or even before ordering when you're on the date make it clear who's paying for the bill. You can easily do this by cracking a joke like "thanks for treating me to dinner" or "we're going splits unless this date goes really well."
Don't forget to have fun and let loose a little. Have a drink or 2 but don't overdo it. Nothing is more stressful than having to deal with a drunk date who is either getting to hands-y, who is in the bathroom puking or worst of all who gets kicked out of where you're on your date for being drunk.
Always have a lineup of potentials for the cuffing season in mind. When October rolls around you'll want to narrow down your list of prospects so that you know who you might be interested in cozying up with during the long winter months to come.
Be sure that you want to participate in this entire "Cuffing" phenomenon. The worst thing you can do for yourself is to decide to give this a shot if it's not for you. If you are in the game then be sure to truly play the game and jump into your "cuffing" relationship with two feet.
Be sure that the person you choose to cuff understands what it means and that they are okay with it. If they're not then you need to steer clear of that person.
It's okay if you end up in a long-term relationship out of this. Just because your initial thought was to find someone for cuffing season it doesn't mean that your relationship has to end at the end of the season. If it lasts longer, then that's great too. Talk about a success!
It's also okay if it doesn't turn into love, sometimes cuffing season is just that, a season of romance and then when the nicer weather appears, the two of you part ways. Be Thankful for what you had, but okay with the end of the relationship as well.
Before you put all your eggs in one basket and choose to settle in for the long winter with months with someone you want to make sure that he or she has what you want in someone that you are getting ready to spend a great deal of time with. Is this person someone you see yourself spending long winter days in bed with or binge-watch the next great Netflix series with? Are they someone you can see yourself ringing in the new year with? If you can't answer yes to all of these then it's clear that they are not worthy of you spending any more time with them.
You can get a lot of stuff done and do a lot of fun things when you're not spending all your time cuffing with someone for the winter season. You might be a person who just isn't into having a relationship, that you're totally okay snuggling up in your cozy PJs for the winter rather than having award body next to you every night and that's okay. Some singles prefer not to get caught up in all the drama that comes with being cuffed. They also won't have to deal with the emotional drama that goes along with the heartache at the end of the season. If you're the type of person who loves, loves, loves your single life, it may be difficult to want to stay at home all night with someone and cuddle on the couch in your PJs. So you'll need to ask yourself is cuffing for you or not.
What do you do when spring rolls around and you find that you're stuck in a relationship that you didn't intend to be stuck in? No one wants to have to turn into the jerk who "although things were going great he/she just up and vanished from my life". The best thing that you can do is to talk to your potential partner right from the start and see where both of your mindsets are at. It might turn out that neither of you wants anything long term but having someone to hang out within the winter, to do fun things with, go on dates with, take to the office Christmas party and home for the holidays works for both of you. It may also turn out that you both decide that your relationship is totally worth carrying on into the spring and summer months. Whatever it is that you decide to do when it starts to get warm out again, you need to remember that first and foremost you need to do what's right for you. You don't want to feel like you're trapped in a relationship that you can't get out of no matter what the season.
Cute And Nice Things Happen To You
When cuffing season is approaching, you will notice that you're receiving cute messages, that other singles are being nicer to you, that they are more engaging in conversation or doing nice things like bringing you coffee for no apparent reason.
Exes Resurface
All of a sudden you'll notice that that one ex who you can't seem to make a true forever break from has popped back into your life. If there's anyone who can suck you back into a relationship during the cuffing season it's an ex. They know you and what you like, so why not go with something that comfortable.
Deadlines
By the end of November, you will have to make a choice which of the people in your life that have been trying to snuggle up and stay warm with you for the cuffing season you're going to choose. Making the right the decision is key because you're going to be with this person for the next 6+ months. Who knows, if things go well you might even be with them for long.
Lots Of Sex
With cuffing season comes lots and lots of S-E-X and it's great too! You'll have sex wherever and whenever you can with the person you've chosen for the season. Because it's new you'll be having sex so much that you'll want to buy stock in a condom company.
Holiday Parties
